Your To Do List:

Alum of the Month

Reginald Nelson

FEBRUARY 2025

Russell Byers Charter School Class of 2008

Reginald started at RBCS in the 2nd grade and graduated from 6th grade (we did not have a middle school at that time) in 2008.  He then attended a very structured Mastery Charter School in South Philadelphia and participated in their initiative to enroll high school seniors at Community College, where he spent his senior year loving thes trust instilled to manage his own academic schedule.

With the support of RBCS staff, he applied for the Gates Millennium Scholarship, which required 8 essays and an intense application process.  As a national program, the competition was very high; only .01% of Pennsylvania applicants received the grant.

Reginald loved Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA and the supportive faculty and staff.  There he began creating activities for Bucknell’s 7th Street House, an Affinity home dedicated to highlighting the importance of Umoja, or “unity” and eventually transitioned from a mechanical engineering major to a business major with a focus on marketing, innovation, and design.

Following graduation, Reginald’s first job was as a canvasser for various charities which required him to stand outside and gather information from anyone who would share with him.  He spoke with over 125 individuals a week, but the pressure was intense to meet the quotas.  He was so successful – he was sent to Washington, DC to canvas – but as Bucknell University’s homecoming approached, he decided to leave. He then joined a German based marketing company called VOK DAMS and worked on prestigious accounts, including BMW, Henkel, Porsche, and Liebherr.

Then Covid hit. During this challenging time, Reginald went back to the books to earn his Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification.  He is now in his fourth year at Porter Novelli, an international PR agency owned by Omnicom PR Group based in the Netherlands.  They are best known for pioneering social marketing.

In his free time, Reginald and his wife love to cook, gather friends for game nights, dinner parties, and holiday gatherings.  Additionally, together, they are interested in further exploring issues and careers related to AI, IT, and network security; but still have hopes of one day owning their own Trucking Dispatch company.

In thinking of what to say to current RBCS students, Reginald wanted to tell them, “Life is going to keep changing and you have to be willing to change and adapt too. Even when life gets hard, you can become better.”

As Reginald uses his entrepreneurial skills to grow and learn, he is adamant that he would not be the person he is today without the Byers School experience.
